Reading Notes Part B: Marriage Tales

This is an interesting set of stories. In many of them, the human turns into an animal or vice versa. I know that the Native American tribes' spirituality aligns closely with animals. I am Osage. It took me some time to pick a story. I think it is because I could not follow along with some of them due to either their names in the story or just how crazy it was. I can easily write about humans turning into other animals and doing something unique or strange. This story will be easy to write. I just need it to be worthy of my portfolio, so there is some pressure there. Marriage Tales: Stith Thompson's anthology  read here North American Tales

Week 8 Progress

I am not completely pleased with my progress so far. I need to make time for extra credit to get caught up. Between work and school it is difficult to have any time to myself. I enjoy the readings the most and taking notes the way I want to in order to write the story. I am not taking advantage of the extra credit assignments like I should. I just need to dedicate one full day to get ahead in class. Stress has overcome me and I am trying to do my best. Motivation

Week 8 Comments and Feedback

I think that the feedback could be more constructive. I find that the comments that let me know if there is confusion or anything in the story help me the most. I believe that I am helping when it comes to grammar, but the content aspect could use improvement. I realize just how immense the possibilities can be when it comes to writing our weekly stories. I do not feel like I am getting to know people because I usually do not connect with people over the internet. I have to see and talk to people physically in order to feel like I have any sense of who they are. I am happy with my introduction post. I believe that I could look up more feedback strategies in order to benefit others and myself. I chose this particular graphic because it clearly states the adjectives that should describe your feedback style. It is concise and I like the colors. I think that it helps more than the others because it does not have as much writing. 21 Components of Effective Feedback

Week 8 Reading and Writing

I think that the Laos stories were my favorite. All of the stories involved animals or people and taught you lessons. Each short story made an impact on the reader. I also believe that I could try harder when it comes to the stories and reading notes. I could try different reading and writing strategies. I have not done creative writing other than for this class in a very long time. Business writing has been at the forefront of my mind. Short, sweet, and to the point has been my strategy. Because there are so many choices and venues I could take with my writing, it can make it difficult to start each story. Starting is the hardest part. Reading and Writing

Week 7 EC: Learning by H.E.A.R.T. Empathy: I wish my teacher knew

I have seen this before and it is heartbreaking. Teachers are human and if there is a kid giving them trouble, they will become frustrated with them. The difficulty comes from thinking of why the kid is being like they are. School could be their escape and that might cause them to act different. There is so much that teachers do not know about their students. It is their job to teach. You will get those amazing teachers who make teaching personal and they are truly admirable. The pressure is ridiculous sometimes. I feel sorry for these kids. Empathy

Week 7: Back Up and Review

Announcement Photo "You want your sentences to live, not to join the living dead."- Helen Sword  (see link from photo) This quote is from the video "Zombie Nouns," which is a video about normalization. I learned a great deal from this video. I did not know that in creative story writing that something so simple to fix could either make your readers engage in the story, or drift to sleep. Active verbs are important. I did not realize how much I use normalization in my every day writing for marketing.  I liked this particular graphic because of the colors. It was a plus that I liked what it said too. I think it is a beautiful creative picture.

Week 7 Tech Tip: Canvas Mobile App

Canvas Student for IOS: I-phone I downloaded the canvas app last semester, I think. I do not use it often, because I forget that I have it, but the app isn't bad. It is easy to read canvas messages and you can turn notifications on, so that you can be notified when a teacher contacts you personally. I normally use the app to check due dates or read the syllabus again later on in the semester. I do not use it to do assignments, because I do not trust it that much.

Week 7 Reading Notes Part B: Laos

Laos Tourism Laos Folk-lore by Katherine Neville Fleeson  Link Here The Wizard and the Beggar The Beggar was unappreciative and came to kill the wizard to get both of the jewels along with others. The Beggar was ungrateful, so one of the two jewels were taken away by the wizard as he used to other to fly into the sky. The Legend of the Rice The people made the rice wait until they were ready, so now people on earth must gather it into the granary from the fields. One Woman "One Woman in Deceit and Craft is More Than a Match for Eight Men." The quote above is the entire story in one sentence. She was clever and evaded death many times.  Seven lovers wanted to kill her. She killed all seven men by inviting them to a feast in which she poisoned. Conned a man into burying the body for money, but if the dead "husband" comes to life, he shall receive none. Chum Pow caused problems between the man who buried one of the lovers and a charcoal burner, s
